Winter Olympics 2026: Host Cities, Sports, Schedule and Key Facts

Ukraine’s First Olympic Gold: A Historic Moment

Ukraine won its first Olympic gold medal in February 1994 at the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. On that occasion, Ukrainian figure skater Oksana Baiul claimed the gold medal, writing her name into the history of national sport.

This triumph became possible after the International Olympic Committee officially recognized the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine in 1993, although it had been established back in 1990. From that moment on, Ukraine received full status as an Olympic nation, and its athletes gained the right to compete under their own national flag.

Before that, Ukrainian athletes were required to compete as part of the unified team of post-Soviet countries, and their medals were effectively credited to a shared overall tally. Individual national achievements did not receive separate official recognition.

At the same time, the position of the International Olympic Committee was, to some extent, understandable: Ukraine as an independent state was still in the process of formation. The Constitution was adopted in 1996, and the national currency, the hryvnia, was introduced that same year. The country was going through a challenging period of establishing its political and economic institutions.

Oksana Baiul’s gold medal became a symbol of Ukraine’s emergence as an independent sporting nation and marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Ukrainian Olympic movement.
